● sédation nom féminin (latin sedatio) Utilisation de moyens en majorité médicamenteux permettant de calmer le malade en vue d'assurer son confort physique et psychique tout en facilitant les soins.

⇒SÉDATION, subst. fém.
MÉD. Apaisement d'un trouble organique, d'une maladie, d'une douleur. L'évolution de la myasthénie chez la femme enceinte peut se faire aussi bien dans le sens de l'aggravation que de la sédation (QUILLET Méd. 1965, p. 372).
— En partic. Apaisement d'une excitation nerveuse. La douche froide: amène une vaso-constriction périphérique considérable (...) qui est immédiatement suivie d'une vaso-dilatation (...) qui décongestionne les organes profonds, amenant ainsi une sédation marquée du système nerveux (R. VUILLEMIN, Éduc. phys., 1941, p. 81). Ce produit entraîne plus souvent une sédation nerveuse que de l'excitation comme cela se voit avec l'amphétamine (R. SCHWARTZ, Nouv. remèdes et mal. act., 1965, p. 29).
